What Causes Vaginal Spotting During Pregnancy?

I m 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant. Just started having mild bright red spotting. I ve had a miscarriage in the past so I figured I was having another and put a tampon in as I had to leave the house quickly. Then I read about not using tampons while pregnant and quickly took it out. It was in for about 30 minutes. Did I do major damage? I know there is no way to know now if this pregnancy is viable. Time will tell but I m worried about what I might have done by inserting the tampon

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Implantation bleeding is a common cause of spotting early on in pregnancy. Implantation bleeding happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This may occur because there is an increased number of blood vessels in the tissue around the cervix during pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajeet Singh, General & Family Physician
