What Causes Urinary Incontinence In An Elderly Person?
My mother is 12 weeks off 100 years old. She is thin and does not have any oedema in her legs but suddenly they are leaking fluid at night. She takes Moduretic every other day as her feet have swollen occasionally if she walks a lot. I elevate them as much as possible. She does have COPD. and Atrial Fibrillation. The dementia is increasing rapidly lately. Is there a thing I can do about the leakage?
Urinary incontinence is common in elderly people. She should take the medicines as prescribed.
She can apply a low dose estrogen vaginal cream directly to the vaginal walls or urethral tissues, it relieves the urge incontinence.
If this does not work, she should be physically examined. A medical device, urethral insert; inserted in the urethra may help prevent leakage. She can use pessary or adult diapers.
Her treating doctor may suggest anticholinergics to control urge incontinence.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
