What Causes Urinary Incontinence In An Elderly Person?

I have an aunt in a nursing home who is suffering from incontinence. She complains frequently that when she sits tomurinate that she cannot go and when she then stands up the urine will pour out of her. She had a mesh sling inserted approx 12 years ago. To me it sounds like her bladder has dropped. Do the slings go bad? She is frequently having urinary tract infections. She is 83.

Hello
My name is Dr.Arianisa Bajrami
Thank you for your question on HCM

I do understand your concern about your aunt.Let me explain everything.
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) which primarily occurs in women, is the involuntary loss of urine caused by physical activities, such as laughing and sneezing.Even the pressures of pregnancy and childbirth, and even aging, can contribute to SUI.

To create a bladder sling, a surgeon uses strips of tissue or a synthetic material like mesh to create a pelvic hammock around the bladder neck and urethra to keep them closed during normal activities.
Patients who reported post-surgery issues have prolonged difficulty urinating or they incur new symptoms of incontinence, specifically urgency. The risks associated with the surgery also include infections at screw or staple points, internal bleeding or injury to an organ.
But the most common side effect are urinary tract infections
Best to do is to talk with an surgeon and explain to him your concern

So these are the complication of slings.Hope your aunt can get better oon
Please ask me any questions you have

Best regards
