What Causes Unusual Intolerance To Alcohol?

During the past 6 months I have developed a sort of intolerance to alcohol. It seems to make me somewhat fuzzy in the head . This after one beer, shot of whisky, or wine. I tried potato vodka which seems to be a little more tolerable. I also cannot use the hand washing dispensers loaded with alcohol. These make me very woozy in the head. This just started about 6 months ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to have some sort of alcohol intolerance of some degree. It may be because of lack of enzymes which metabolize the alcohol or it could be due to some allergic reaction to some chemicals in the beverage. The former is a genetic condition found more commonly in people of Asian descent. Unfortunately, nothing much can be done about this and I would recommend you to avoid use of alcohol or drink in very limited quantity on a full stomach.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
