What Causes Unexplained Swelling And Pain In The Ankle?

I only work 2 days a week, on my feet for about 8 hours each day. A few months ago I woke up to a swollen ankle that I couldn t put weight on. I was forced to use a crutch and call in sick. The 3rd day the pain was reduced to a mild acne but the swelling remained, a puffy look to it. That following week at work I ended up in so much pain and back using a crutch and called in sick the 2nd day. This is continually happening each week. I have had to take a short leave from work, hoping it would subside. It occurs still, if I walk for any length of time such as shopping. The pain will go away but the swelling does not.??

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about having swollen ankle with pain, needing crutch to support while walking.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
Arthritis of the ankle joint with synovial thickening.
Twisting injury unnoticed when it occurred.
Any other specific cause like tuberculosis and so on.
This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination.
MRI of the joint.
FNAC of swollen synovial membrane.
Relevant tests of blood like RA that is Rheumatoid Factor and as advised.
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and thus gives a plan for proper management.
Till then give complete rest to the ankle.
Take an anti-inflammatory medications with painkiller properties.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
