Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father is 93. He was experiencing some shakiness or tremors in his hands before he fell 2 months ago. He fractured his leg in the fall at the top in the area surrounding the rod portion of his hip replacement. Now when the therapists try to stand him up he gets too shaky to do it. He spent most of the past 2 months in a non weight bearing status so he got little therapy on the leg that was injured. They have suggested he see a neurologist. It s odd though - the shakiness in the erect position started immediately after the fall. While in the ER before the fracture was discovered they tried standing him up and he was quite shaky in his body. He did not have the tremors in the body before the fall except for the hands. What do you think?
Possible causes of shakiness may be due to weakness in leg muscles. It may be due to disc compression or prolapse with spinal cord compression. It may be due to parkinsonism or Non-use muscular atrophy etc.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.
Give him physical exercise, Use high protein diet.
If symptoms not improved please consult your neuro physician/orthopedician they will examine the level of the lesion then treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
