I am a smoker, used to smoke about 6-7 cigarettes per day till 6 months ago....... now it s usually 3-4 a week. However, I seem to have a chronic cough , and today morning some traces of blood were present in my phlegm. What could be the underlying cause?

Hello
Welcome to HCM.
The reason for blood in phlegm is most probably some erosion in respiratory tract due to chronic smoking.
I think you must get a chest xray done. It could be bronchiectasis also. Visit a physician for treatment.
Quit smoking completely.
Hope this helps you.
Thanks.
