What Causes Tightness And Pain In The Throat And Chest?

I get a tightness and pain in the front of my lower throat (near adams apple) and down into the chest just behind sternum. The symptom lasts about 1-2 minutes. Today I was at rest just sitting and it is my day off, enjoying my grandson and just returned from 1week vacation in Hawaii.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are several possible causes for tightness and pain in the throat and chest, including:
* Anxiety and stress can cause physical symptoms such as muscle tension and chest pain.
* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, chest pain, and throat irritation.
* Muscle strain or injury: Overuse of the muscles in the chest and throat can cause pain and tightness.
* Thyroid problems: An enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) or thyroid nodules can cause throat discomfort and tightness.
* Cardiac issues: Chest pain and tightness can also be symptoms of a heart attack or other cardiac problems.

It's best to consult a doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms and receive proper treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
