Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Thickening Of Tongue Towards The Base?
I have thickening of the tongue which is more toward the base. I am an ex-smoker. I have been basically without symptoms and this was caught while doing an MRI for pain in the jaw. My first concern is cancer and this is basically what I am seeing on the internet. What would be some of the other causes for thickening of the tongue. No speech problems are swallowing.
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query. The thickening of the tongue can occur secondary to any lesion like benign tumor within the tongue. If you are a arecanut chewer, then the floor of the mouth where the tongue gets attached can get fibrosed(oral sub mucous fibrosis). So consult an oral physician and get it evaluated. You need to stop smoking permanently. I hope I have answered your query, take care.
