What Causes Thick Oily Patch On The Crown Of The Scalp?

One day ago I noticed as I was drying my hair I had a oily almost waxy patch on the crown of my head. I assumed I did not wash all of the conditioner out of my hair. However I have re washed my hair and the patch has not been washed out even though I made sure I have it a good scrub. I can not tell if my scalp is also oily however it covers the entire crown on my head at least 3-4 inches of hair is covered in this thick oil. When I touch it it almost feels sticky but not overly. I have not changed any of my shampoo or conditioners and can not come up with a reason as to why out of the blue this has happened.
