What Causes The Spine Stick Out?

My daughter is 12yrs old & a healthy thin, her spine has always stuck out as well as her shoulder blades. I thought as she got older this would maybe go away, but if anything her spine sticks out more...especially if she s slouched forward, should I be concerned?

Hi,

I deeply regard your concern towards your daughter.

1) You have mentioned that she is thin, this is the most probable reason why her spine is sticking out. This would go away only if she gains weight. However you should take care that she does not bend forward too much while reading or watching TV, phones, using laptop etc. This will cause posture related back problems.

2) If her posture is good and straight, you have not much to worry about. Make sure she gains weight and have a BMI around 21 to 22. Make her do regular exercises for her age. Yoga too is recommended with proven benefits. And you do not worry you are a loving parent.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

With best regards,
Dr. Suhas Chauhan
