I just retired from the dental field after 40 years(assisting and administrator) I have slowly gained a tenderness on and around my thumb and the padded area on my palm below the thumb ..it aches and seems some what swollen...I inherited arthritis in my joints from my Mom s family but do not suffer with unbearable discomfort..not needing medication...Have taken some aleve but it tears up my stomach...suggestions??
Pain in the thumb, which is chronic may indicate osteoarthritis. Thumb joint is the second common to be involved by osteoarthritis.
However, this would need a proper assessment for confirmation of diagnosis.
You are right, aleve can cause stomach problem and in such cases, all NSAIDS better be avoided. You may use heat pads and paracetamol for the pain instead.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
