What Causes Swelling Sensation Under Tongue?

I noticed a swelling sensation under my tongue yesterday and when I looked at it, I have a fleshy-type cyst attached to my Lingual Frenulum. The swelling pain subsided but the cyst-type structure remains. It looks ghastly and I'm concerned it has not began to disappear. What is it?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query. The swelling under the skin as you mention in query are known as skin tags and the condition is called plica fimbriata .These tags usually occur due friction of tongue with teeth or with base of mouth ,due to continue irritation. Usually people pain and tenderness in these tags initially but it normally subside in few days.

Plica fimbriata is generally a benign condition .If pain or bleeding continue and there is white plaque like appearance then its a serious condition ,because it can be some kind of malignant growth.

Small flaps are harmless . But ,if they interfere in normal functioning of oral cavity then surgical removal will a option.

I would suggest you to apply honey or turmeric paste at night and start taking vitamin B12 supplement.

If the pain and bleeding persist then you should consult dentist/oral surgeon .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
