What Causes Swelling On Upper Lip And Ear Pain While Treating TMJ?

I have TMJ and get slight swelling on the edges of my upper lip and some puffiness on my right cheek after chewing or having food. Also at times my jaw joints near my ears ache slightly. I have been prescribed Mega Free Flex once a day for a month. Will this help. My orthopedic also suggested I go to a plastic surgeon for a opinion.

Understanding your concern.


Thanks for your query . Actually there are two different problems . The swelling of lips and cheeks are due to allergic reaction . And ear pain is due to TMJ problem.

Some times problems arises in TMJ like TMJ arthralgia or ankylosis , because of which it does not work well and create problems .

I would suggest you to :-

- Continue mega free flex .

- Consult oral surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment doctor may recommend condylectomy , interposition arthroplasty or arthroplasty using autogenous costochondral graft.

- Take ibuprofen (if not allergic ) or acetaminophen for pain and swelling.

- Give warm compresses on joint .

- Take over the counter anti histamine drug like bendryl or zyrtec for allergy.
