What Causes Swelling On The Roof Of Mouth?

The left side of the roof of my mouth is swollen. The hard palate. It hurts and throbs really bad. I can feel the bump when I run my tongue over it. My dentist gave me antibiotics but it s day 7 and nothing has changed with pain or swelling. What could be wrong?

Hello,

It is nice to know that you have been examined by a dentist and had been taking antibiotics. Now, you complain of no improvement at all after taking the prescribed medicines for seven days. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an Oncologist or GP to detect the possibility of canker sore, cold sores, oral tumor, cancer of 'pizza palate' (burn), etc.

Your treating doctor will tell you to do a series of blood tests and imaging tests (CT, MRI) if a lesion (swelling, bump) is detected. You may be told to get a biopsy done. Your treatment (with medicines or surgery)will depend on the reports obtained and your clinical condition. Avoid touching and picking them. In the meantime, be careful of what you eat. Do not take anything that may trigger the symptoms. Take bland food. Rinse your mouth and gargle with warm water. Avoid hot beverages, salty spicy, oily food.

You can use pain relievers, Tylenol or ibuprofen for relieve.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
