What Causes Swelling On The Lower Lip?

I enjoy snaking on shopped raw vegetables dipped in hummus. Sometime, this causes my lower lip to swell or a rash to develop on my hips. The rash causes itching that is controlled by OTC Cortisone cream. The swelling of the lips is somewhat uncomfortable but not painful. All symptoms are gone by morning. What gives?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using Healthcare Magic.

I understand your concern.

Swollen lower lip can be caused by:
1.Food allergies, such as seafood (fish, shrimp, crab), eggs, nuts, and so on
2. Drug allergies
3. Contact dermatitis, for example due to the use of lip color (lipstick, lipbalm)
4. Angioedema, etc.

As a first step, here are some things you can do:
1. Avoid foods / drugs that allegedly trigger the emergence of allergic reactions, such as seafood or eggs
2. Compress the swollen area with a clean towel soaked in cold water or ice
3. avoid spicy and hot foods or drinks
4. Avoid touching or rubbing the swollen lip area
5. Drink a lot of water
6. You can take cetirizine or loratadine twice a day or using hydrocortisone topical cream on the affected area.

If the complaint does not improve within 3 days, see your doctor immediately for further examination and treatment.

Regards,
Dr. Nurul Falah
