What Causes Swelling On Lips?

In the past few weeks, I have had lip swelling for no reason. I have not changed makeup, Detergent, foods, perfume, bath soap. I have never been allergic to anything. There is no sore, broken skin. It just happens at any time for no reason. I could be talking and all of a sudden a corner of my lip begins to swe ll up. It look like I bumped it or someone hit me. I have never had a cold sore either. Do not have herpes simplex. This is weird and scary.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query. The symptoms you mention in query i.e swelling of lips are pointing towards condition known as allergic reaction and it could be due to excessive lip biting as well.

I would suggest you to :-

- Give cold compresses to affected area 2-3 times a day .

- Take over the counter antihistamine drug like benadryl or zyrtec. .

- Drink plenty of fluid , drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day .

- Do not touch the affected area with your hands as it can aggravate condition.

I condition doesn't get better in a day then consult dermatologist for proper examination and to rule out other cause like trauma , angioedema or pimple .

Doctor may prescribe antibiotics and steroid ointment. If the allergic reaction is severe then doctor may give adrenaline short .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
