What Causes Swelling Of Foot With History Of Kidney Disease?

Hello, I am away from home so dont have access to my family MD. I am experiencing foot swelling and tightness. I have RA, chronic kidney disease and take blood pressure meds daily, and my bp is always well controlled. What might be going on and how can I aleviate it? Thanks.

Hi,

You may be landing into kidney failure (you are already a known case of CKD so chances are that it is getting uncontrolled). This is leading to the build-up of waste products (urea and creatinine) in your body along with retention of water and electrolytes which is causing swelling in your feet. First of all, you need to keep your feet up in a horizontal position more, avoid prolonged standing or sitting, cut down on your salt intake. You also need to get your kidney function test (KFT) which includes urea and creatinine done along with electrolytes.

Increased urea beyond a certain limit may cause uremic encephalopathy (this may lead to altered sensorium and seizures). Moreover retention of potassium may lead to hyperkalemia which is potentially life-threatening as it may lead to the development of abnormal rhythm of the heart. So, if these two are increased in your investigations then you may need to undergo dialysis. Please take all precautions as advised above and put two pillows under your legs during sleeping. Get these investigations as soon as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Kaushal Deep Singh, General Surgeon
