What Causes Swelling In The Upper Lip?

My husbands upper lip has become so swollen. He says he didn t eat anything that could cause it to swell. He just rubbed sanitizer to his hands then touched his mouth. He has no,allergy on food and medicine. What could be the cause of this swollen lip? Any advice?

Hi,

Well, sudden swelling of the lip is appearing most probably due to allergic reaction causing a condition known as Allergic Angioedema of the lip. It can be due to the sanitizer but as it evaporates quickly, it is less likely to cause such a severe swelling. Other common reasons for the swelling of his lip can be any food or medication while other causes can be allergic reaction to any skin cosmetic, soap, lip balm etc.

You consult a Physician and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests for allergies like RAST TEST, Patch test, Food Challenge test can help in ruling out the exact cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly. As of now take anti allergics like Allegra or Levocetrizine. Do cool compresses over the lips. You can be advised injectable steroids and antihistamines to reduce swelling.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
