What Causes Swelling In The Legs After A Hip Replacement Surgery?
I am 6 wks. post op total hip replacement - have been doing great until 3 days ago the operated leg started to swell fm toes to thigh & swelling does not go down at night. Today, the other leg has started to swell. Operated leg is so swollen, can barely see toes & all the way up the thigh. Other than the surgery, healthy - no other health problems ...currently doing mile + on treadmill, plus numerous other exercises for rehab. Any ideas...
Most probably sounds like deep venous thrombosis a common complication following hip surgery. Were you prescribed post op blood thinners like Heparin and Warfarin?
Because normally these are prescribed postoperatively following hip surgery. You need to undergo a Doppler ultrasound of you legs. Meanwhile keep your legs elevated and wear compression stockings and consult a physician as soon as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Humaira Naerm, Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeon
