What Causes Swelling In The Leg While Having Asthma And High Blood Pressure?

Hi, I am 62 yrs old I have asthma, high blood pressure, and other things. Ri right now I am concerned about my left leg lower part of my left leg and my ankle and my foot and toes they have been swollen often on for a while but the past couple of weeks they have really been swollen to the point of turning a pale color almost white also I have developed some kind of rash , open sores that ooze and bleed as the skin stretches tightly on my leg. I don t seem to have a problem with my right leg. I had my veins checked previously and they are perfectly fine and was told the swelling might be due to lymph but it seems much worse to the point of not getting my shoe on. What could be the problem? Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Based on your symptoms, I would like to rule peripheral arterial disease (occlusion of the smaller arteries on the left leg).

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
-did you have the venous scan before the swelling?
-do you have numbness or pain in the affected leg?
- upto what level in your leg does the swelling reach?
-Have you ever smoked?
-any family history of heart disease or vascular disease?

I recommend :
-a physician consult immediately or a visit to the ER right away.
-an ultrasound or MRI angiography to detect the vascular occlusion

It is vital that you seek medical attention right away as this can go from bad to worse and lead to life threatening complications.
The sores are due to stagnation of fluid and can lead to severe Infection which can threaten your leg and life.

You will need to go prepared for hospitalization. Take someone along and don't drive.

In this scenario, an intensive unit care will be necessary with intravenous medications.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
