What Causes Swelling In The Left Leg And Arm?

My husband is having swelling in his left calf...and now his left arm. He is 61 - on xarelto, high blood pressure meds, and has varicose veins. Pretty good shape, athletically. He has googled it -- says compression socks is first step. Should I be worried?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query.
Yes, he should apply elastic stockings and avoid long sitting and standing. This sounds like varicose veins which are enlargement of legs veins due to weakened vessel wall and insufficiency of vein valves. It is usually caused by long standing, obesity and genetic factors. In severe cases it can be treated with surgery which is also a permanent solution then.
Hpwever, if there will be persistant swelling, it would be good to do doppler ultrasound to rule out deep vein thrombosis, athough this is not likely if he is on xarelto.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
