What Causes Swelling In Knees, Leg And Ankle?

A 45 year male has swelling around both knees and down lower leg to ankle. When you press on a area the skin sinks in and very slowly springs back. He has high blood pressure and is being treated with lisinopril. He can hardly bend his legs. should he go to the doctors?

Swelling in the legs is generally attributed to a few conditions. Some drugs, decreasing heart function, kidney function or liver function can cause this. Without further details on his general health and previously done tests, I would be remiss to make a guess as to the cause.

I would advise getting the following tests and meeting his PCP:
— ECG and Echocardiography
— kidney function tests
— liver function tests
— Review of current medicines for side effects
These would help us understand his baseline and how to take things forward.
