What Causes Swelling In Knee After Having Xarelto?

I had Xarelto day 2 and day 3 after total knee replacement. Severe swelling began and Doctor stopped pills. After being home a few days swelling and redness became worse and I was put back in hospital to suction out blood amount size of football. Two days later Doctor drained off about 3-4 ounces of blood so I could go home. CPM machine was stopped also. I still have a lot of swelling and redness. Therapy is difficult. I had a very successful knee replacement 11 years ago on opposite knee

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

As mentioned by you that post TKR you are having swelling and redness in the operated knee. CPM is stopped. And the fluid was also drained.

Now to help you further, you have undergoing 11 years ago a TKR which was successful as your age was the matter. Now 11 years later you are 11 years older than the first TKR. So there will be a lot of degenerative changes in the body and muscular system. To start with, The CPM at this stage will be a painful process for the and the internal muscular injury will be possible.

So stopping the CPM is a good choice. Now since you are at home, i will advice you to take quick icing technique which a physical therapist will help you for it. As quick icing helps to reduce the swelling by providing the quick muscle contraction. Performing static quadriceps and static hamstring, though it will be painful but will surely help to make the TKR successful once again. Also, by performing SLR the drain of the swelling is possible and the optimum recovery is achieved.

In my personal practice i have seen cases with similar complaints and they are helped better with physical therapy even in the painful state. A 99% recovery is achieved in most of my cases and expect the same from you.

A strong will power will surely help you to come out of this situation.

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Ntambue's  Response
Hi there
Xarelto is a blood thinner, prescribed to you after knee replacement to prevent you from making blood clots in your legs which could ultimately travel up to your lungs and kill. complications of Xarelto or any other blood thinner is bleeding. swelling in the knee was caused by new bleeding in the knee, hence your doctor had to drain it out and Stop Xarelto. This incident increases your risk of knee infection. If you are still worried that swelling is worse then I suggest you see your surgeon again as soon as you can since this time it could be an infection setting in.
