What Causes Swelling And Pain In Foot With Nausea While On Allopurinol?

I have started 100mg of allopurinol 2 week ago i was suppose to take one a day now have to go 2 a day for 14 days. My foot is swollen and the pain is unbearable and I am feeling nauseous. The last tylenol #3 was at 1:00pm. I have to take my allopurinol now can I take a tylenol and a advil 400mg at the same time. My Dr. said advil does harm my kidneys, but could I for a short period. I am soaking my foot in cold water. Is there anything else I can do. The gout is in the family and I do not drink I wish I did then I could just quite and it would go away. I am a 73 years old female. My uric acid is high. Is there anything else I can do. A friend of my son said he was off work for a month when he stared the allopurinol. They had me on another drug last year, but I became violently ill on it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Allopurinol induced acute arthritis. Based on the history you seem to have developed an acute flare up of gouty arthritis apparently caused by increased release of uric acid from the articular cartilage into the joints causing painful swelling in the foot.

I would advise you to take allupurinol along with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or indomethacin for a couple of weeks to get rid of the acute flare of the disease.

I also advise you to take plenty of oral fluids and avoid purine rich foods such as beans, red meat, wines, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
