What Causes Swelling And Inflammation On The Back Of The Calf After An Injury?

Have a large hematoma on back of knee. Fell from a step on latter to next step and grazed/my leg with all my weight hanging and slipping on next tubular step until I was able to land on other leg. Bruised before and after back of knee all the way to the calf. Extremely swollen at first now mainly on back of right knee and upper calf still swollen and tight. Turning red throughout and lower than original area. Could this be infection or normal? Feels hot.6 days have passed/last Sunday. Been using ice to relieve.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems to be inflammation of the part being injured.hotness on the part indicates inflammation. Ice bag application &over the counter pain pills like Ibuprofen would give relief.

The appearance of severe pain & fever suggest infection &need of antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
