What Causes Swelling And Bruise On Arms After Practicing Sports?

I am a volleyball player and I noticed after the first day of practice my hand was really swollen, and bruised from the middle of my arm all the way to the knuckle of my thumb. I have gone to a doctor about this before in March which started happening in volleyball and I was told I just bruised the bone. With the same symptoms still happening only when I play volleyball not any other sport I decide to go to the doctors again. They tell me the same exact thing, I probably just bruised the bone. I asked if I should still be practicing and they told me he s and it will go away in a couple of days. Now I noticed it keeps getting worse and worse each day. They took x-Rays and I even got to see them. No broken bone. I m curious as to if their is something else wrong besides a bruised bone of the symptoms keep happening.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the volleyball play is associated with variety of ortho conditions ranging from hair line fracture, bursitis or tendinitis from recurrent trauma. Though X-ray is normal, the pathology is not ruled out merely by that.

In my clinic, I do recommend an MRI of the hand after clinical examination for further guidelines of management. Till that time, arm sling support and avoidance of volleyball play are best indicated suggestions from my side.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
