Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My lower lip started swelling about 3 hours ago. When it started, I had not eaten anything, just had a glass of wine. I am concerned because it was not caused by injury. I took 2 Benadryl hoping the swelling would decrease. It's only been perhaps 30 minutes since I took them, but have not noticed a difference yet. What would cause this? Should I be concerned or do something else?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sudden swelling in lower lip which are pointing towards allergic reaction and angioedema which occurs due to reaction of body to any antigen. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to give cold compresses to affected area 2-3 times a day. Drink plenty of fluid and avoid intake of any sharp food substances. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day . Do not touch the affected area. Take over the counter antihistamine drug like benadryl or zyrtec. If condition doesn't get better in a day then consult dermatologist for proper examination and to rule out other cause like trauma, sun blister and pimples. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics and steroid ointment. If the allergic reaction is severe then doctor may give adrenaline short .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
