What Causes Sudden Sharp Pain In Throat And Breast Bone Area?

I was gulping a cold beer a few minutes ago and felt sharp pain in my throat and then to the breast bone area. I laid down. My pulse is regular and strong - wife is a nurse. It seems to be slowly subsiding, I burped. Took two regular strength ibuprophin and am sitting to send this e-mail after lying down for about a half hour. The pain has subsided but is still there with a little head ache. I was to my chiropractor today to get an adjustment, neck pain due to a fall and stiffness between 5 and 6. I am 62 take allopurinol, and Lipitor for a few years. No serious heart trouble in the family.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history that you are a male of 62 and got a sudden pain in the throat and the breast bone area while having beer.
The commonest cause if the spasm of the pharyngeal and esophageal muscles in response to the chilled nature of the beer and thus causing you the symptoms.
I would advise you the following:
Also take Ranitidine or Omeprazle.
Antacid gel 3 hourly
Soft bland and warm food and beverages.
Avoid aerated drink totally.

Get an Upper GI endoscopy so that any other associated problems can be diagnosed and treated accordingly.
