What Causes Sudden Increase In The Heart Rate During Child Birth?

I'm a medical missionary in Indonesia, and just delivered a well nourished woman at home who had a heart rate of 102 when labor started 5 hours ago, went up to 132 about 2 hours before delivery, and was 135 an hour after delivery. Her blood pressure continues to be normal. She had a moderate blood loss after the birth, I gave one ampoule of oxytocin, and the placenta was delivered 20 minutes after the birth. Suggestions?

Hi,
There are several possibilities, the most common ones being the stress of labor leading to hormone release and also increasing the metabolic rate thus causing increased pumping of the heart to counter the increased muscular activity and the demand for the increased uterine supply. Complications like embolisms, uterine tears/rupture are usually associated with other abnormal vital signs, which are not seen here. Excessive blood loss is another possibility and lastly, Oxytocin itself can cause faster heart beat. Hope this helps.
