What Causes Sudden Increase In Blood Sugar?

I began taking 25 mg Dapsone today and when I checked my blood sugar tonight it was higher than normal and my diet and routine for the day were pretty much the same. Could it cause a spike? I do not take medication for my diabetes at this time, diet and exercise controlled.

Hi,

Dapsone belongs to the group of antibiotic medications known as sulfones that is used in the treatment of leprosy and controlling of a skin problem called dermatitis herpetiformis. Dapsone reduces inflammation and stops the growth of bacteria which may cause diseases. Dapsone may be used in other disease conditions as directed or prescribed by the physician. Antibiotics like Dapsone can affect blood sugar levels.

Dapsone may falsely decrease HbA1C level and sudden elevate blood sugar levels, especially in diabetic patients. It is one of side effects of Dapsone. After stop taking Dapsone, your HbA1C level will be raised and your blood sugar will decrease or come back to normal. During taking this medication, you should monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
