What Causes Stop Breathing In 11 Day Old Baby?

My 11 day old granddaughter was taken to the er yesterday evening because she stopped breathing. This was the 4th time it happened. The first 3 happened before she ever left the hospital after her birth. The er dr. last night said it was periodic breathing.....everything I read on that says it happens while they are sleeping. My grandbaby has these spells while she is wide awake. I'm afraid they are missing something and something bad might happen...

This could be apnea of prematurity. But I would like to know your grand baby's gestational age and maturity. What was the birth weight and did she require any assistance to take the first breath.
