Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Stool Incontinence And Unusual Odour In A 3 Year Old?
My three year old daughter has been popping a little bit at a time all day long and it smells very strong like metallic. Her diet has not changed and I m potty training her. Does this sound like an issue and what could be causing it? Or does it sound like she s holding in her bms out of fear of going in the toilet?
Can you mention, how long she is having this problem? Any history of constipation (infrequent / tight stools) before this issue? any vomiting or abdominal pain?
This can happen from acute gastro enteritis(stool will be loose) or constipation, with bowel holding habits as you mentioned. In constipation, kids hold bowel anticipating pain, and this further aggravates the situation.
Small amount of faeces is pushed out spontaneously when rectum is full and it can no longer hold anymore. If constipated, this needs de-loading with a suppository, followed by a course of laxatives and diet modification.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
