What Causes Stomach Ache After Increasing Pantoprazole Dosage?

I have been prescribed Pantoprazole 40 mg. After my endoscopic exam last Tuesday, it was suggested that I increase my once a day 40 mg dose to twice a day. I have been having stomach pains since Thursday morning, and when I called the medical assistant whose phone number I was given to use if necessary after the procedure I told her that I normally eat a banana first thing in the morning, but on Thursday and today my stomach started to ache/cramp soon after I ate the banana. It was suggested that I take the pantoprazole 30 minutes before I eat anything, and to wait to eat the banana until after I have eaten something such as oatmeal, as bananas have a lot of potassium. That is the reason I started eating one or two bananas a day, as I have been diagnosed with low potassium. Can you verify this information for me--take the pantoprazole 30 minutes before I eat anything, and wait to eat a banana until after I have something else in my stomach?

Hello,

I understand you have a question about stomach pains on Pantoprazole. The medical assistant is right about taking the Pantoprazole 30 minutes before eating, as this will maximize the absorption and the effect of the medication.

As for the banana, it is true that supplemental potassium pills can upset the stomach, and that bananas are high in potassium, but I am not so sure they have enough potassium to cause upset stomach. However, if for whatever reason the banana is upsetting your stomach, it is reasonable to eat something with it, or avoid eating them to see if that helps. It may also be that there is another cause for your stomach pain, depending on what they saw on endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
