What Causes Stabbing Pain And Burning Sensation In The Shoulder?

At the front of my right shoulder I have been burning, stabbing pain. Sometimes it is so excruciating that I dig at the spot to try to ease the pain. I had a cortisone shot two days ago but the symptoms have started coming back already. Could this be something besides bicipital tendonitis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Burning or stabbing pain is most commonly neurological in origin, nerve related pain is called neuralgia.

There are different causes for neuralgia, it can be temporary or permanent.

Some of the more common causes are: trauma to the nerves in the area, diabetes, low vitamin b12 or folate, abnormal b6 levels, thyroid disease, liver or kidney disease, infection, exposure to toxins, MS. BLood tests and imaging may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
