What Causes Small Lumps And Tenderness At The Back Of Neck After A Shoulder Massage?

Hi. I had a back,neck and shoulder massage yesterday and when I woke up the back of my skull is very tender and has five small lumps approx pea size on both sides of lower skull. I have been anxious and stressed the last few months, but feel this is more related to the massage as they have appeared the following day . Should I seek medical advice? Tracey

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have small lumps and tenderness at the back of neck after a shoulder massage . Well it is very important to find out the exact cause of neck stiffness , lumps and correct it .

Neck tenderness and lumps can occur due to may reasons like muscle strains , nerve compression , Injuries ,diseases, cervical spondylosis and Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis . Trapezius muscle problem , friction due to massage or allergic reaction can also be one of the reason.

I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor will examine physically , ask you to do certain movements and may order CT scan . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant and may recommend specific exercises .

Acupuncture will also be helpful. For now do stretching exercises , apply ice pack on lumps , take benadryl twice a day and start physical therapy of neck . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy . Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist .
