What Causes Slurred Speech And Difficulty In Swallowing?

My 99 yr old Mother was having slurred speech and difficulty swallowing so we went to ER and they did an MRI, CAT scan , and blood work and all they found was severe sinus infection. Can this cause the swallowing problem and will the Cipro antibiotic take care of this or is it a more serious condition?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The slurred speech and difficulty swallowing seem to be more of neurological symptoms. it is not common for sinusitis to cause them.
On t he other hand severe infection in the elderly may cause them to be confused and nonresponsive.
If the slurred speech and difficulty swallowing lasted for less then 24 hours then TIA can be a cause and not much findings are seen in brain scans and this is a warning sign for a possible cerebral event soon. She will need heart check and carotid artery ultrasound.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
