What Causes Slow Metabolism Of Food?

I am a 39 yr old female that has had my large colon removed back 2007 and a tiny piece was reconnected to my rectum to try and avoid the use of a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. But ever since then I still do not metabololize food and drinks properly. I have never had a normal stool. It is always looks like discolored water (anywhere from bright yellow to dark brown). Never a solid stool to date. I will admit that I do not drink as much water as I should nor do I eat regularly. I never know from one day to the next how it will affect me. Sometimes no problems, then again im going to the bathroom immediately following with cramps sometimes. So with saying all of this....I am wondering if not having a large colon and not being able to metabolize things properly and like most should, can this play a part in my body not eleminating alchohol properly as well. Sometimes since I dont eat full 3-4 meals a day when I drink socially sometimes the alchohol hits me worse than others or at other times. The reason I am asking you this question, I havnt been in contact with my surgeon since the procedure and I thought I would try this out first....but at the moment I am fighting a DWI case. The night it happened, I had been sick for 2 weeks with acute bronchitits and was on antibiotics and promethazine with codeine cough syrup for the 2 weeks, went to my place of employment for about 2 hours and had two 20 oz beers and a shot. Was completely fine, fine enough that I went into the office got my purse and keys, talked to some coworkers and left. Got in my car and drove about 10 mins away and stopped at light and fell asleep. When the cop pulled up next to me, I awoke startled and got out of the car. I was extremely upset and crying uncontrollably. I passed I believe 1 or 2 of the sobriety tests but failed the others, plus I was coherient enough to refuse the blow test. So they handcuffed me and took me to jail. Never in my life have i been handcuffed or much less taken to jail. Clean record, never in trouble with the law. So I went and finally met with my atty yesterday and got my BAC level back and it registered as a .26 there is almost no way that I should have been able to function 10 mins prior to leaving to almost not being alive. I just no that with all the medical issues, had been sick and on meds for 2 weeks prior, worked two doubles that week with hardly any rest and very few meals that there has to be some explanation as to why it registered so high but yet I was normal 10 mins prior and then as soon as I got to jail to be booked and finally calmed down after a few hours I was completely normal again. Im trying to see if my medical condition can justify this and if so, the DWI can possibly get dismissed or the offense lessened. Im not trying to get out of the offense at all, just trying to figure out #1 if this is possible cause if so, I need to not ever drink alchohol for my own health sake or much less leave the house if I do. Because if this is something that can happen at any time due to not metabolozing things properly, then I need to know medically. I know I need to get back into the doctor to check everything but I have not had insurance for the last 4 yrs, hence why I have not gone back for routine follow ups.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The different causes for slow metabolism in your case are:
- Short length colon
- Chronic alcohol intake
- Deficiency of digestive enzyme
- Gut motility issues
- Intestine flora disturbances
- Others

In our clinic we recommend a follow up colonoscopy to manage further. So, as far as attorney aspects are concerned, those have to be discussed with him in office only.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
