Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What causes Shingles to breakout? I was 17 the first time I broke out with a rash & dismissed it as a spider bite or something similar, but within a year or so realized odds of bite 2 more times in same spot had to be something else. I m now 50 & have 2-3 breakouts per yr. This time it is higher up next to spine. What can I do to prevent this occurrence? It s painful across areas shortly before the rash appears.
It is not possible to have shingles if you have never been exposed to chickenpox or the varicella virus that causes it. Once exposed, the virus can lay dormant for years. Most adults with the dormant virus never experience an outbreak of shingles.
However, in some individuals, it may reactivate multiple times. While the exact cause of multiple breakouts is not known, low immunity may be one of the reasons. Food rich in vitamin A and C will help build up your immunity.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
