What Causes Sharp Pain In The Rib Cage On The Left Side?

I m having sharp pain around my left ribcage and middle abdominal area.. it hurts really bad kind of like I m being crushed and kind of burns a little?.. it s sudden and ongoing for about two hours now..happened the same yesterday but didn t last as long as it is now. I cant get comfortable at all.. I keep moving trying to relax but it s painful. . And when the pain increases it gets harder to breath.. right now it s calm down but I haven t moved at all and I m breathing very slowly and softly hoping it won t hurt as bad. Should I go to the e.r? Or how can I stop this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The pain you are experiencing seems typical of muscular pain, which is generally worse with movement and breathing. I would recommend you to take Ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours after food today and paracetamol 500 mg every 8 hours with it. If you notice the pain is not getting any better with these but you think is getting worse then you will need to see your doctor to rule out other conditions related to heart and lungs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
