What Causes Sharp Pain And Ringing In Ear While Suffering From Cold?

What does a perforated eardrum feel like? I have a headcold and a cough, and that always makes my ears plugged so I have to try to pop them to hear properly again. I was cleaning my ears, my right one, and may have gotten too far, it was a sharp pain. my ears are still a bit plugged, but now my right one is ringing loudly, and it hurts to hold my nose and try to pop it. I am wondering if I perforated my eardrum, and what i should do, how long will it take to heal, etc.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Experiencing sharp pain and ringing in the ear while suffering from cold is quite a common phenomenon. It is due to acute otitis media - infection of middle ear. Perforation might not have taken place right now, because, perforation would relieve pain and cause ear discharge. Pain is mainly due to pressure on the tympanic membrane.
This is because congestion and infection of the throat can easily spread to middle ear via Eustachian tube, causing ear symptoms.
Treatment remains the same. You may take the following medications:
1. Nasal decongestant syrup containing bromhexine, chlorpheniramine maleate and Guaniphesin - 2 teaspoon 3 times a day.
2. Tablet. Azithromycin once a day for 3 days.
3. Salt water gargling with warm water twice daily.
By 3 to 5 days, your symptoms should subside.
Hope the information is clear and useful.
Wish you good health.
