What Causes Sharp Fall In Platelet Count Despite Treating Dengue?

Hi. My father was detected with positive dengue day before yesterday with platelets count being 1 lakh 40k and the same day the blood test was done again and they came down to 1.25. Later 1lakh 8k and then it increased to 1lakh 13k. Today they blood was checked again and the platelets suddenly came down to 6400. He is active and is eating normal. What should I do? Should I take him to a better hospital for treatment or should I wait for his platelets to increase that s what doctors here are advising. P.s- the hospital he is admitted in now is one of the best hospitals in bangalore(Mallya Hospital)

Hi,

Platelets do drop in dengue and it may be quick. However, most of the times this transient and after few days of drop platelets start rising. They can drop further however often this is not very serious.

Until it's less then 30 thousands its mostly dogs not make a big concern. There is no need to change hospital as there is no treatment for dengue. Just keep an eye on his platelets, and BP. Give him more fluids.

If he feels dizzy or fainting or severe pain in right side of tummy or persistent vomiting then you should be worried. Otherwise it's a few days story and resolves it self.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
