What Causes Severe Vomiting In A Drug Addict?

My son has been throwing up for the four days now. Everything he eats comes back up. Fluids as well. Although he is steady hydrating himself. He has managed to keep some of the fluids down at to times. He is an IV user of heroin and smokes cocaine also. I am very concerned for his health and well being. He is 27 years old and has only been using for the past 6-8 months. The whites of his eyes are dark yellow color. Do you know what his condition could be? Thank you, a very worried and concerned mother

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It is probable that your son has developed a liver infection. Infections are common in IV drug users and you are aware that your son does IV drugs for 6 to 8 months. Therefore during this time or recently he might have got a liver infection which is causing symptoms of vomiting and discoloration of the sclera in eyes. This is some thing that requires immediate attention and it is suggested that you take him to the ER for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment.

The doctors will do clinical assessment keeping in mind repeated bouts of vomiting and if a liver condition is suspected then an ultrasound scan abdomen and blood tests for the liver and routine testing might be done. Please have him treated and also try to get him off drugs at the earliest. Continuing drugs will do a lot of damage to his health. Please do not worry.
