What Causes Severe Upper Abdomen Pain On The Right Side Of Rib Cage?

Pain in upper abdomen and on right side below rib cage and between shoulder blades. Happens after meals. Have had ultrasound of gall bladder, pancreas, right kidney and liver which showed nothing abnormal. Have had endoscopy and colonoscopy which were normal. Have history of heartburn but not this bad nor in these areas, usually in chest/esophagus area. Frannie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
With a past history of heartburn, the most probable cause of your problem is gastrooesophageal reflux disease or Gastritis. It pains in the upper abdomen as you have described and radiates at times to the back, neck and shoulder blades.Other possible etiologies have already been excluded from your test results. Avoid much protein rich meals, peper and much green spices, sleeping at least 2 hours after last meal may help reduce severity. An anti-secretory like omeprazole can also help reduce severity of pain.
wish you the best
