What Causes Severe Soreness And Itchiness In The Vagina?
I am a 52 year old woman-I saw the Dr. a couple of weeks for a sinus infection and got an antibiotic which I think is causing me to have occasional diahhrea and my butt hurts and my vaginal is itching and sore. Should I quit taking the antibiotic? Should I see the Dr? I have taking pepto bismo and used preparation H wipes.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Yes, your guess is correct, some antibiotics do have a side effect of causing loose motions. Similarly while attacking the disease causing bacterias, many a times antibiotics also kill good strains of bacterias in our body- which are protecting us. Thus antibiotics facilitate growth of vaginal infections Sp. yeast infection & this creates itching/white discharge/ burning. * Please do not stop the antibiotic abruptly, visit your doctor, let him decide weather to stop antibiotic or to substitute it. * yest infection needs to be confirmed by a gynecological examination/ vaginal swab test- followed by specific treatment for both sex partners. Thanks.
