What Causes Severe Rash On The Forehead While On Plavix And Zemplar?

I am and have been on dialysis for over 5 years. I have sessions twice a week for 3 hours. My medications consist of Plavix 75mg; 1 daily (due to previous TIA episodes) and an 81 mg aspirin. During dialysis I am given Citrasate solution instead of Heprin to prevent clotting during the session. Within the last year Zemplar (10MCG/2ML) has been administrated to reduce parathyroid levels and I also take Tums 1000mg before each meal for the same issue. My problem is that I have been developing a severe rash primarily on my forehead and scalp that starts during the dialysis session and continues for 24-48 hours. The rash causes my skin to peal due to the inflammation. This condition is growing worse to the point that it is difficult to even sleep during these episodes. I have know allergies to Allopurinol and Sulfa based medications. I have tried topical medications including hydrocortisone creams with little success. Since it is not likely that I can stop dialysis, I am looking for other possible remedies. Any suggestions? Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be due to an allergic reaction. As a first line management, you can apply low potency steroid creams like betamethasone for symptomatic relief.

If the lesion persists, it is better to consult a dermatologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
