What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Left Abdomen?

Hello. I have had abdominal pain for a few days. It started out with a dull pain on the left mid to lower abdomen. I have not done anything strenuous so I did not think it was a muscle strain. Yesterday and today the pain has been intermittently very sharp pain. It feel sharpest lower left abdomen and then radiates upward. I have no fever, no vomiting or any problems with bowel movements. It seems to be very random to all of the sudden have sharp pains. I went to immediate care location earlier today. There was a nurse practitioner instead of M.D. and they checked UA and it was fine. She went straight to the area I said was painful and did not palpate the rest of abdomen well and then said she cannot do work up to diagnose acute abdominal pain. I am 51 years old, had a complete ovariohysterectomy 4 years ago, gall bladder removed 17 years ago, colonoscopy done 13 months ago, routine, internal hemorrhoids otherwise all ok. Sorry for long history. I hate to go to ER and waste anyones time but also do not want to keep hurting especially if it could be serious. Thanks.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It sounds like diverticulitis. For the acute phase of the recurrent diverticulitis antibiotic therapy is required but once the acute phase settles down severe and drastic lifestyle modificatory changes have to be followed by the patient for many months to avoid recurrent attacks. So I'm sorry my dear but if you are sure its diverticulitis then broad spectrum antibiotic have to be taken.

I would suggest you take Clindamycin with Metronidazole. They would cover both bacteria as well as protozoa, however, you would need a prescription for the same as antibiotics are not over the counter.

Probiotic etc. would help but if its diverticulitis then you have to take antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
General Surgeon
