What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Back?

My husband has been having back problems for a few weeks and babying it. This morning he woke up and said it feels like something moved in his lower back. He would like to know what do you think it could be and should he see an Orthopaedic Dr ? Thank You. Jayne

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your husband is having pain in the lower back since 3 weeks. It can be due to a strain (injury) to muscles or tendons in the back. Sometimes, arthritis (lower back pain, inflammation and stiffness in the spine), structural problems (spinal stenosis) and disk injuries, disc problems (slip discs, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease) can also cause lower back pain.

Your husband is suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedist, get blood works, spine X-ray, MRI, CT, EMG (if required) done to detect the pathology causing the symptoms. His treatment will depend on the pathology detected. Appropriate rest, physical therapy and medication will help to reduce pain.

He should maintain healthy weight and staying active. Some back injuries and conditions require surgical repair only when they do not respond to treatment. He can take Naproxen or Combiflam, one stat after food to get relieve from pain and soreness. Gentle massage with pain relieving ointments may help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
