What Causes Severe Pain In Buttocks Radiating To The Knee?

Started having a pain in my right buttocks that goes down into my knee, Especially when driving. My knee hurts upon standing or if I twist my ankle causing my knee to also twist. Thinking it might be a nerve since it goes down from buttocks to knee.

Thank you for your query.

Your guess is spot on.
Sciatica or nerve impingement can cause the symptoms you described. This pain however, occurs in the back and side of your leg and all the way down to your feet and toes.
This is usually worse on sitting for a long time or any activity/position that puts pressure on the nerve.

Symptoms to watch out for are progressive weakness of muscle of the leg and loss of bowel and bladder control , in which case see your physician immediately or go the ER.

did the pain start after a fall or any strenuous activity? fracture of the vertebrae could lead to this as well.

Please see your doctor for a detailed evaluation. the sooner , the better and pain indicates nerve damage and the sooner that is avoided or taken care of, the better the prognosis.

in the meantime, avoid sitting for too long or activities that put a lots of pressure on your spine ( sleeping a soft bed, lifting weights, driving)

hope this helps.
please get back to us if you have further queries. Wish you good health
