Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Pain Behind The Knee After Partial Knee Replacement?
I had a partial knee replacement last March from which I ve now fully recovered. However, for the past month or so I ve been getting quite severe pain behind the knee which feels like tight bands pulling together and when this happens I cannot move the knee at all for fifteen minutes or so. It gradually eases and eventually goes away altogether. This is happening every few days and I m wondering if it s a trapped nerve. Can you advise please? Many thanks.

Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tim Evans's Response
Hi. Following knee arthroplasty, your knee joint will never feel as good as it once was. You will be prone to experiencing episodes of tightness and pain. However, the main thing to consider is whether there is any infection within the knee implant or whether there has been any aseptic loosening. If you have not been checked out by a doctor, I would suggest doing so and obtaining some blood tests to exclude infection and also an XRay if you have not had one recently. If these are all satisfactory, then some regular physiotherapy may benefit you, focusing on certain range-of-movement exercises and muscle-strengthening exercises.
